Four homes. Two buildings. One standard.

Fifty Charles Street sits at the top end of the city centre, a few minutes from the castle, the arcades and the stadium — which is to say, a few minutes from the reasons people come to Cardiff at all.

The building has been stripped back and rebuilt as three separate apartments: two three-bedroom and one two-bedroom, each self-contained, each finished to the same specification. New kitchens, new bathrooms, new flooring throughout, and the wiring and plumbing behind them replaced rather than patched.

These photographs were taken the week the work finished, before a stick of furniture went in. We would rather show you the building honestly than wait for the styling to arrive.

Roath is where people actually want to stay in Cardiff: Victorian terraces, the lake and the park at the top of the road, Wellfield Road for coffee and dinner, and the city centre a few minutes away.

The house sleeps seven across two bedrooms, with a full kitchen, a proper sitting room, a dedicated workspace, free parking on site and a private garden at the back. It is furnished, equipped and cleaned to a standard we are happy to be judged on, and it has been running long enough for us to know what works.

It takes bookings as The Central Hideaway. It was fitted out for what it is — a Victorian terrace in Roath, with the warmth that suits one. The city-centre apartments at Charles Street are a different building in a different part of town, and they will be their own thing.
